Our Mission
Equal Access to Healthcare
Critical Shortage
The United States is grappling with a critical shortage of providers. With 37% of the active workforce nearing retirement, the demand for skilled providers is outpacing supply1. This shortage is particularly severe in rural communities where nearly 20% of the US population lives, but only 10% of providers practice2. This contributes to significantly higher mortality rates in rural areas for the top 10 causes of death compared to areas that have a higher density of providers4. As the workforce shortage gets worse and the demand for diagnostic and surgical care increases, it is essential that we address this issue to ensure timely access to healthcare for all people.
What's the issue?
In many underserved communities, wait times for essential services can extend past six months due to the severe lack of available providers, significantly delaying critical diagnoses and treatments.

Democratized Access
Our vision is to enable a world where everyone has convenient access to high-quality diagnostic exams and interventional procedures so that they can live longer, healthier lives. To achieve this vision, we’re using the latest advances in AI, robotics and networking to break down access barriers, starting in historically underserved communities. Our innovative approach will bridge the gap between patients and providers, ensuring essential services are accessible to all.
Our Vision
Our first simulated minimally invasive procedure at a rural hospital.
"Ocean Beach Hospital and Medical Clinics (OBHMC) has been collaborating with DOPL since February 2021, beginning with the pilot of a robotic system for cardiac ablation procedures in our main Operating Room. The test/proof of concept was an outstanding success. Shortly thereafter, DOPL shifted its focus to developing a non-invasive Tele-Robotic Cardiac Ultrasound (TRCU) platform, with OBHMC at the forefront of its implementation. As DOPL seeks FDA approval for remote operation of the TRCU platform, OBHMC is proud to partner with them in providing essential services to rural hospitals"

"When I first heard about the mission, I felt really inspired by the idea because it is an issue to find cardiac care in rural areas. Hearing that there’s an opportunity to remedy that issue really spoke to me...I can really empathize with the patients who have to travel a ways to get quality care, and I think that the echo robotics will be a really great solution for these rural areas."

Who We've Helped
About Us
Ryan James, PhD, Steve Seslar, MD, PhD and Wayne Monsky, MD, PhD began their journey researching novel methods to deliver care at the University of Washington in 2017. They conducted several research initiatives, including in vitro1,2 and in vivo3 remote robotic minimally invasive procedures, in addition to holding stakeholder workshops4. Upon realizing there was a better way to deliver care, they co-founded Dopl in 2022 to democratize access, with special focus on historically underserved communities.
